The Remakery is a space for making things from waste materials that is open to local residents, makers, artists and businesses. Our aim is to reduce waste and support our local community by sharing skills and sparking ideas.

The Remakery seeks  a

Membership & Space Lead

Details:

Location: Remakery Brixton Ltd, 51 Lilford Road, London SE5 9HY
Reporting to: Designated member of the Remakery Board
Salary: London Living Wage
Duration: 12 months with possibility of renewal
Hours: 30 per week (times to be confirmed though the pattern will likely be 1 – 8.30pm Wed – Fri; 10am – 5.30pm Sat or similar)
Expected start date: January 2018
 
The Remakery, having recently been awarded a grant from the Fore Trust which is part-funded through the Big Lottery Fund, seeks a dynamic, committed self-starter who will be responsible for the day-to-day running of a community hub that affords opportunities for creativity, enterprise, education and interaction, all centred on the re-use of waste materials.

As Membership & Space Lead you will:

  • Be responsible for the opening and closing up of the Remakery, ensuring that workshops and other spaces are suitable for use;
  • Interact with members (‘Remakers’), and strengthen and apply systems for membership and induction;
  • Deal with enquiries, such as about membership, space hire, donation of materials, events;
  • Monitor users accessing the Remakery, keeping a log of appropriate data to enable us to demonstrate our impact;
  • Oversee our materials supply by liaising with suppliers and local businesses, and manage storage space and how Remakers access materials;
  • Enforce Remakery policies and procedures, including health and safety measures;
  • Be responsible for core cleaning tasks and waste management;
  • Direct volunteers and/or hosts who will support the day-to-day operations;
  • Mitigate or deal with any day to day issues arising at the Remakery, flagging them to your manager or other individual as appropriate;
  • Keep information displays up to date and support other communication work, such as on courses and events at the Remakery;
  • Organise or support Remakery events, such as exhibitions or parties.
  • Undertake other responsibilities within the general remit of running the Remakery.

In the initial months you will focus on developing systems to enable the smooth operation of the Remakery, on-boarding new members and following up on enquiries.
 
You will be part of a small team and will work closely with the Remakery’s Board of Directors, site team and other volunteers to help the Remakery thrive.

ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE CRITERIA
 
Commitment to Remakery’s vision

  • Commitment to the Remakery’s Objects
  • Community-focused
  • Familiarity with the Remakery

Leadership

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently 
  • Able to take initiative and make sound decisions 
  • Experience of working in small teams or with volunteers / hosts

Relationship management 

  • Ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with stakeholders from different backgrounds 
  • Friendly and personable, willing to deal with all kinds of people and requests

Technical knowledge 

  • Highly organised and able to multi-task and prioritise
  • Experience of using and maintaining databases, preferably a membership database 
  • Strong communication skills, preferably including promotion communications
  • Experience of planning and running events of various sizes
  • Demonstrated ability to receive ideas and feedback and use them constructively to develop a piece of work
  • Experience of starting up a small business / charity / cooperative or maker business
  • Strong local networks in Brixton, Camberwell and surrounding areas
  • Proven experience of working with the Remakery’s core client groups: makers, artists, designers and start-ups; young people not in employment, education or training; adults with complex needs.
