Fundraising Manager
Overview of Role:
- Reports to: Deputy CEO
- Role: To develop and implement a strategy for Sported’s Major Donor and Trusts and Foundations fundraising, building on success to date and leveraging the support available from senior colleagues and supporters to meet our ambitions to generate £1m annually from these sources, from a mix of existing and new prospects.
- Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Sported operates a core work hours system, meaning employees can structure their work around the core hours of 10am and 4pm. There will be an expectation to work some evenings and weekends. However, time off in lieu, in accordance with the Sported policy, will be offered for anti-social hours.

- Salary: Up to £42,000 per annum

Main Duties & Responsibilities
Major Donor Fundraising (estimated 50% of time)
To develop and lead a strategy, to increase Sported’s income in this area to £400k per annum, through planning and coordinate the high level support available to attract, secure and steward high net worth individuals (already connected to Sported) and develop a new pool of prospects over the next 12 months.
- Prospects & Donors
- Build on existing prospect relationships with senior colleagues and create focused materials, to bring the ‘warmest’ major donor prospects to the point of donation
- Create individual journeys for existing prospects – from introduction to donation
- Work with Sported trustees, CEO and Deputy CEO to coordinate communication and information that lead to an ask being made
- Create regular opportunities for physical and virtual stewardship for existing donors – including events, reports and email updates on organisational impact/progress
- Devise ongoing stewardship plans – stepping up of gifts, increasing engagement, providing donor value to ensure ongoing strong connection of current donors
- Leverage support from current donors as powerful connectors to corporates, trust, and statutory donors whilst also exploring potential for valuable gift in kind opportunities.
- Research and plan routes to new individual prospects and pools of prospects – using key Sported assets and connections
- Stay up to speed with best practice Major Donor fundraising identifying areas of compliance, new areas of opportunity and innovation within the sector
Trusts and Foundations (estimated 30% of time)
To lead the strategy, planning and coordinate the support required across the Sported team to generate at least £600,000 from Trusts and Foundations over the next 12 months.
- Develop, and support the development of, applications to trusts and foundations across the UK for both restricted and unrestricted income
- Coordinate all existing connections to current trust and foundation grants – through prompting reporting at the appropriate time,
- Provide the ongoing assessment of regional, country or UK-wide trusts and foundations appropriate to Sported
- Engagement of relevant Sported staff and stakeholders (trustees, members, volunteers) to connect with relevant senior individuals at key T&F
General fundraising activity (estimated 20% of time)
- Create key packages or areas of focus for communication to prospective donors, with the support of Sported field team staff.
- Manage involvement of Sported and/or other stakeholders – to strengthen connections and interest in Sported’s work
- Create regular reports outlining progress against plans for key major donor and trusts/foundations targets – to share with trustees, Deputy CEO and others
- Liaise regularly with Communications and the Field Team to ensure most up to date knowledge and understanding of issues for members/young people and the Sported solution
- Track all correspondence on Etapestry database and weekly updates against pipeline
Person Specification:
Part 1: Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Solid experience of major donor and trusts and foundations fundraising including;
- Creating donor journeys for individuals and managing
- Completing high value (6 figure) trusts and foundations proposals
- Writing briefs and preparing senior colleagues for key fundraising meetings
- Stewarding donors – via meetings, events and ongoing communications
- Working with high level people – trustees, partners as well as donor prospects
- A proven track record of securing funds from both individuals and trusts and foundations
- Ability to communicate effectively and powerfully at all levels
- Experience of researching income opportunities, identifying and presenting new prospect opportunities to senior colleagues
Desirable
- Experience of coordinating regular, appropriate involvement of senior colleagues and supporters to support key relationships and donor asks
- Understanding of Sport for Development in the UK
- Experience of working for a UK wide organisation with remote workers
- An understanding of all of the elements of organisational management in the third sector, including governance, business planning, financial management, policies and procedures, monitoring and evaluation.

- Willing to travel occasionally to regional and national meetings, sometimes out of office hours.
