WEN are embarking on an exciting 3 year programme ‘Soil Sisters’ creating therapeutic gardens and delivering weekly social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) or green care sessions at 5 women’s refuges across East London.
Funded by BIG Lottery Reaching Communities, WEN are working with Ashiana Network and Hestia to support women to improve wellbeing, raise aspirations, build confidence and develop skills.
We are recruiting a team to work across the programme with each of the 5 refuges allocated a lead Therapeutic Gardener. We expect a long term commitment and will be flexible around availability. This is an opportunity to work long term with women to support recovery and shape the program around their interests, needs and life goals as well as create therapeutic spaces that support recovery through traumatic transitions.

About the Role:
We are looking for dynamic, experienced and person centred therapeutic gardeners who will take a lead creating beautiful gardens and delivering weekly sessions at women’s refuges in East London.
You will need to be highly creative to plan and deliver year round engaging activities based in small gardens with limited growing spaces, listening to the interests of residents to create a range of nature inspired ‘green care’ activities that might also include cooking, crafts, and trips.
You will need to be highly professional, supportive towards residents needs and work closely with both the Soil Sisters Manager and refuge staff to ensure successful delivery of the programme.
Main Responsibilities
- Take overall lead for your allocated refuge gardening project.
- Design and deliver high quality STH or green care activities that supports refuge residents enhance their skills, confidence and overall health and wellbeing.
- Effectively monitor and evaluate the programme in line with set frameworks
- Ensure the programme is based on the principles of respect, co-production and person-centred support building the programme around residents interests.
- Coordinate and mentor volunteers allocated to your project, lead occasional team volunteering days.
- Work with partner refuge staff to promote the project to ensure participation
- Adhere at all times to both WENs and our partners policies and procedures including Safeguarding, Health and Safety, and Lone Working.
- Plan and deliver structured courses when possible to compliment programme.
- Work closely with the Soil Sisters team to ensure effective delivery.
Essential
- Minimum 2 years experience working in community gardens or running therapeutic garderning sessions.
- RHS Level 2 or equivilent practical experience as a gardener using organic methods
- Experience supporting vulnerable groups through running therapeutic activities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to form supportive professional relationships with diverse people
- Volunteer coordination experience
- Experience of designing and implementing gardens
- Highly self-motivated and good team player, able to seek advice and support when needed
Desirable
- Post Graduate Diploma in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture, or other relevant training
- Experience leading participatory garden design process
- Experience working in NHS, mental health, health caring, or refuge environment
- Expertise or interests beyond only gardening that can enhance the project
- Clean drivers licence
Please Note:
- Appointment to this role is subject to satisfactory reference and DBS check.
- Refuge staff and residents will be involved in the recruitment process.
- Refuges are based in Tower Hamlets, Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone and Barking.
- Each reguge has between 5-9 residents
