Who we are

Year Here is a platform for young professionals who want to build smart responses to social problems. We are a postgraduate course in social innovation based in London.

Unlike a traditional Master's degree, Year Here is immersive and action-oriented. Our Fellows try their hand at building creative responses to social problems, supported by industry mentoring and a rigorous social innovation curriculum.

Year Here Fellows have collectively volunteered 80,000 hours in frontline services – including homeless shelters, care leavers' services and pupil referral units – and launched 23 new social ventures backed by Nesta, The Observer, Ashoka, UnLtd, Bethnal Green Ventures and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Over one year our Fellows learn from, and design with, people at the frontline of inequality – in care homes, homeless hostels and youth services across London – and go on to found some of the most promising social impact startups in the country.

Since launching at 10 Downing Street in 2013, we’ve worked with 128 aspiring social entrepreneurs and launched award-winning social ventures like Cracked It, Birdsong, Fat Macy's and Chatterbox.

We’re a deeply committed team of 8 surrounded by a faculty of 75 social innovation experts – the great and the good of Britain’s social impact world. We care about being first-rate professionals, learning with restless vigour and having fun along the way.

Year Here is searching for a

Managing Director

to join the team in London in support of entrepeneuers participating in the programme.

About the role

As Managing Director, you will head Year Here’s day-to-day operations, ensuring that we are delivering a quality product, making profit and maintaining a happy and high-performing team.

A good social business should, first and foremost, be a good business. It’ll be your job to ensure that we meet our commercial goals and turn a profit year-on-year. You’ll manage our finances and, with your knowledge of business operations, make shrewd decisions to keep the business successful.

You’ll manage a brilliant team of 8 – including designers, facilitators and marketeers – and make sure they’re on track with sales, recruitment and programme delivery. You’ll get stuck in to each of these strands and provide timely support and direction to the team members managing each of them.

Plus you’ll take on strategic projects like developing the Year Here Foundation and building out a new executive education offering.

You will manage two directors and two managers and report to the Chief Executive and our board.

This is a full time role.

Your responsibilities

Some of the big challenges we want you to take on are to:

  • Manage our 8-strong multidisciplinary team and build the structures and rituals that keep them on track.

We’re really proud of our people at Year Here. It will be your job to build and maintain a really high performing team for the next chapter of our growth. You’ll lead on new hiring as well as setting HR policies around pay, progression, etc.

You’ll ensure the team has the right project planning and reporting tools at its disposal and that our team culture is a happy, healthy, productive one.

  • Drive our revenue generating activity.

You’ll set sales targets for our biannual sales cycles and support the team to meet them. Each year, you’ll help us secure 50 challenging placements at the frontline of inequality – in care homes, homeless hostels and youth centres – and 10 consulting projects with clients like the GLA. You’ll lead on developing corporate partnerships and winning grant funding to bring additional revenue into the business.

You’ll also oversee the development of strategic partnerships to help us recruit the next generation of Fellows and enhance the impact of the programme – and monitor the effectiveness of our relationship management practices across the board.

  • Implement rigorous financial management practices.

While we are a social enterprise and our primary purpose is a social one, profit is a critical means to that end. It’ll be your job to ensure that Year Here is profitable and that we increase those margins over time.

Supported by our Operations Manager and accountants, you will make shrewd financial management decisions and ensure cost control across the business. You’ll set norms and protocols for all financial activity in the business. You’ll also submit quarterly management accounts to the board for external scrutiny.

  • Produce bespoke reporting on our impact and performance for diverse audiences.

You’ll oversee the team to lead our impact measurement, recruitment audits and programme reporting – and ensure that they are accurate and rigorous. Drawing from these, along with your own financial data, you’ll produce quarterly board papers that give a thorough snapshot of the company’s performance. You’ll also lead on reporting back to our funders and investors.

  • Ensure day-to-day operations are efficient and effective – and build smart systems as we grow into new locations and sectors.

You will coach our Operations Manager to manage our London Fields studio space, equipment, IT systems, insurance, policies, bookkeeping, payroll, etc. You’ll also work closely with him to consider how we can upgrade the various systems we rely on – to bring further efficiency gains. And you’ll support our Communications Manager to ensure we’re attracting the right number and calibre of applicants to the programme.

Alongside core operations, you’ll help us set up the Year Here Foundation, to widen access to the programme, and work with our Chief Executive and Head of Design to develop new offerings, like an executive education programme.

  • Get stuck into delivery.

We expect you to get your hands dirty and take on some programme delivery, recruitment and venture incubation. Whether this is interviewing new candidates, leading training sessions or coaching new ventures emerging from the programme is down to the specific skills and experiences you bring to Year Here.

In the knowledge that Year Here is a small organisation with a young team and heavy demands, you’ll be willing to dive in and work alongside any member of the team at any moment if the need arises.

About you

  • You’re a confident and competent leader

In previous roles, you’ve led teams, complex projects and large programmes. You break down problems with a cool head and take tough decisions when needed.

  • You are a natural autodidact

Through your career so far you’ve taught yourself lots of skills and got to grips with new areas of work – not waiting to be guided by senior colleagues.

  • You have strong financial skills

You’ve managed a P&L before and you have the skill to quickly read a cash flow and the confidence to make tough decisions when the business demands them.

  • You’ve tried your hand at sales

You will have experience of sales and other commercial partnership development. You know what it means to manage a sales pipeline and you’re used to closing deals.

  • You’re a shrewd relationship builder

Whether it’s negotiating contracts or liaising with senior stakeholders, you read situations quickly and make the right call in your interpersonal interactions.

  • Entrepreneurialism and venture support

You’ll be used to achieving a lot with a little. You might have set something up in the past or you’re planning to in the future.

  • You’re not afraid of working hard in pursuit of a big vision.

In summary you will have
