The International Civil Society Centre helps international civil society organisations (ICSOs) maximise their impact for a sustainable and more equitable world.
The Centre works with ICSOs to successfully navigate change. We scan the horizon for opportunities and threats; enable learning and cooperation among ICSOs and their stakeholders; support ICSOs in developing effective leadership; and promote robust accountability to strengthen ICSOs’ legitimacy. The Centre is a not-for-profit organisation fully owned by the organisations it serves. We strive to set high standards in management, governance and strategy for ICSOs and the wider sector.
Programme: ICSOs in times of Populism and Division in Society
In 2019, the Centre will launch a programme exploring the area of “ICSOs in times of Populism and Division in Society”. We are developing a number of elements as part of this programme which will address a) a self-reflection on ICSO legitimacy, partnerships and business models, and approaches to transparency and accountability, to renew public trust; b) an analysis and action around shaping a new positive narrative of civil society and our role in uniting support to address the key global issues of our time; and c) an effort to establish more effective mechanisms for solidary action within and beyond the sector. In early 2019, we will be taking essential steps in outlining and defining this work in more detail, both in terms of further clarifying the context and in outlining concrete suggestions for collaboration.
The Centre is currently looking for an intern to support our work in this area.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Mapping: Based on defined criteria, conduct research of initiatives, organisations and approaches interesting for this work and thus develop a mapping of relevant actors
- Meeting/report background preparation: Assist with content, such as identifying or supporting potential speakers or contributors and drafting input to presentations, case studies, etc. as well as meeting logistical preparation for the Programme Manager and Executive Director. This will include the Innovators Forum on ‘Reframing the Narrative: Creative Responses to Growing Divides’ in February 2018, and the first ‘Innovation in Civil Society Report’ on “ICSOs in times of Populism and Division in Society”.
- Event management: Prepare and support the implementation of various convenings, e.g. for working groups, incl. liaising with participants, travel booking, logistical arrangements
- Communication: Assist in the development and implementation of texts and other relevant communication material, incl. for social media
- Fundraising: Assist in researching potential donors and in developing funding proposals related to this area of work
- Further: Any other tasks as assigned by the Programme Manager
The intern will mainly work with the Programme Manager, but will be part of the overall Programme Team and have opportunities to get to know other areas of the Centre’s work.
Requirements
- Enrolment in an ongoing study programme (“Immatrikulationsbescheinigung”) in a relevant field, such as Political Science/International Relations or Political Communication and looking for a compulsory internship (“Pflichtpraktikum”)
- First hand experience of working or engaging with the civil society sector
- Strong understanding of the current global social and political contexts and challenges within which civil international civil society organisations are working
- Diligent, reliable and focused way of working with strong attention to detail
- Ability to familiarise quickly with new issues and concepts
- Strong teamwork skills
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken
- Good MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Compensation: 350 € per month, before tax for a full-time internship

Starting date: As soon as possible, ideally before February 2019
