Researcher/Adviser, Technology and Human Rights, Berlin
Amnesty International is recruiting for a new full-time Researcher/Adviser position, based in Berlin (Germany), for our Amnesty Tech team, this will be on a two year fixed term contract basis.
Amnesty Tech is a newly created programme in Amnesty’s Research Directorate with a mission to protect and extend human rights in a world of rapid, technological change. We an inter-disciplinary team of technologists and human rights experts currently based in 6 global locations, including: London, Berlin, Dakar, Nairobi, Beirut, Tunis, and San Francisco. In 2019, we will also be expanding to Hong Kong and Amsterdam. Amnesty Tech’s vision is a world where human rights are guaranteed and fostered by the advancement of new technologies – instead of being threatened and eroded - and where the social, legal and economic structures that underpin those advancements are fair, transparent and accountable.
ABOUT THE ROLE
AI has very strong profile on freedom of expression issues. The purpose of this post and the team in which it sits is to develop AI’s programme of work on technology and human rights. Initially, the team will focus on the unlawful surveillance of telecommunications (both mass and targeted surveillance), freedom of expression online and access to the Internet. As an Amnesty International (AI) expert on technology and human rights, lead on the development and implementation of research and advocacy strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities, conducting research, and utilising political judgment and analytical, communication and representational skills. Provide authoritative advice to country and thematic specialists in the International Secretariat (IS), sections and structures. Develop AI’s policy positions and advocacy strategies and contribute to the development of the movement’s strategic goals and responses to human rights issues in this field.
ABOUT YOU
With specialist knowledge of, and familiarity working on, technology and human rights, particularly surveillance and freedom of expression, you will have extensive professional experience of undertaking research on human rights related to the internet and telecommunications.
You will have a good knowledge of the international human rights legal framework and significant experience of undertaking high-quality field research, as demonstrated in a range of publications. You will have the ability to think strategically and exercise sound political judgment in developing policy positions. An advanced communicator, with strong interpersonal skills, you will have excellent written and oral English skills and the ability to produce clear, persuasive, and concise research documents, policy positions and strategy papers.
