The International Detention Coalition (IDC) is recruiting for a Europe Programme Officer to join our dynamic and committed international team, as a key member of our Europe Programme based in Berlin.
1. About the organisation
The IDC is a unique global network of over 400 civil society organisations and individuals in almost 90 countries, that advocate for, research and provide direct services to refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants affected by immigration detention. We work to prevent and limit the use of immigration detention through solutions-focused advocacy and collaboration with a range of stakeholders on engagement-based alternatives to detention.
2. Role Summary
The Europe Programme Officer will work closely with IDC’s Europe Regional Coordinator to fulfil the IDC’s mission at the national and regional levels through networking and capacity building; advocacy; awareness raising and campaigns; and research and reporting on issues relating to immigration detention and alternatives to detention. They will contribute to supporting and facilitating the European Alternatives to Detention (ATD) Network (www.atdnetwork.org) and working collaboratively with members to implement national and regional strategies for reducing immigration detention in Europe.
3. Role Responsibilities
Network development
- Assist with engaging new and existing members and partners in the region
- Supporting peer exchange and the development and strengthening of national and regional networks, in particular the European ATD Network
- Maintain regular and effective communication with members to share resources and information about strategies, activities and opportunities for involvement
Regional research
- Contribute to mapping national and regional immigration detention issues
- Identify and collate positive practices of alternatives to immigration detention in the Europe region
- Contribute to drafting research reports and advocacy materials for internal use and external dissemination
Regional advocacy programmes
- Contribute to developing and implementing national and regional projects and events, including peer exchange workshops, training and campaigns
- Represent the IDC at events and meetings with national and regional stakeholders, including civil society organisations, governments and regional institutions
- Contribute to project management, monitoring and evaluation for the IDC’s Europe Programme using IDC’s internal project management tools and in compliance with funder requirements.
Communications
- Contribute to IDC Europe’s communications, including developing and disseminating outputs and messaging e.g. through IDC Europe Twitter account, the IDC website and monthly newsletter and the European ATD Network website.
Administration and internal support
- Manage IDC Europe Programme’s contacts and stakeholder information using a customer relationship management (CRM) database
- Coordinate and carry out administrative tasks for IDC events and meetings, such as booking venues, organizing refreshments, managing registration
- Organise the practicalities of online calls and webinars
Core Responsibilities
- Actively contribute to a culture of collaboration and support within the IDC team
- Demonstrate a passion and alignment with the IDC’s mission, culture, and core values
- Demonstrate an understanding of IDC policies to ensure a positive and safe working environment for all
- Actively engage with organisational systems, processes and infrastructure to ensure sustainability and appropriate safeguarding of institutional knowledge, assets and core activities over time
4. Required education, skills and experience
- Degree in social or political science, law or related field
- Minimum two years’ experience working in the non-profit sector with refugees, asylum-seekers and/or irregular migrants
- Demonstrated interest in / knowledge of immigration detention and migration management issues in Europe
- Demonstrated experience of working with a range of stakeholders to develop networks and collaborative working relationships
- Excellent communication skills in English, including the ability to present to audiences clearly and confidently
- Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask effectively and to work independently and under pressure
- Experience in planning and organizing events and workshops and working with budgets
- Experience of research, analysis and drafting of high-quality written material in English
- Understanding of international human rights standards relating to migration
- Ability to work flexible hours and undertake travel in the region for the role
Desirable:
- Fluency in one or more other European languages
- Experience of case management with migrants or vulnerable groups
- Experience of using online and social media to promote a social justice issue
