Wikimedia Deutschland– Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e. V. is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany. With more than 100 employees and about 70.000 members, it is the oldest and largest of about 40 independent chapters of the international Wikimedia movement. The best known Wikimedia project, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is used by millions of people across the world every day and is continuously updated and improved by users and subject matter experts.
Wikimedia Deutschland furthers these ideals even beyond the free encyclopedia: It is our aim to establish and promote the creation, collection, and distribution of free knowledge in all parts of society. Our objective is to create a world in which the sum of all human knowledge is freely accessible for everyone. The main focus of our activities is the support of volunteers, the development of technology and software, public education, and cooperation with cultural and scientific institutions. We grant scholarships to volunteers working for Wikimedia projects and we provide technical support. On both the national and EU-level, we are advocating a legal framework which allows for free knowledge to become part of our everyday life.
We are looking for a Product Manager (m/f/d) to join our Software & Development Department in the heart of Berlin. This role will focus on feature development for MediaWiki, the platform that powers the Wikipedia projects, their sister projects, and many other projects around the around the world. The focus will be on product management of the Technical Wishes project. Since the project practises community-centered software development, not only the technical aspects but also the social and collaborative aspects of software development are important. The role will report to the Head of Product Development, and is part of a team of product, program, and project people.
As Product Manager you have/are:
- Product management or equivalent experience with a demonstrated ability to discover opportunities, and then define and deliver products
- experience with different methodologies in the product space, you have failed and learned from it
- a team player, and an eye level communicator with a proactive attitude for solving problems
- working in a structured way with an ability to focus on the essentials
- an attentive listener and able to see multiple perspectives
- familiar with modern software development practices
- A strong understanding of technology and ability to work well with engineers
- the ability to assure a consistent, rapid and effective delivery of products
- experience with data-driven decision making
- working knowledge of the German language
What you will perform
You will perform as part of a cross-functional team consisting of UX, Engineering, and Community Communications, and take care of solving technical problems in close collaboration with the German-speaking Wikipedia Community and other Wikimedia communities from around the world.
You are responsible for:
- Aligning, structuring, and communicating the product roadmap for your area
- Prioritising of incoming feature requests against strategic goals and planned work
- Executing product research and finding the product/market fit for a given problem space
- Defining features and products with UX, Engineering and Community Communications
- Managing and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including volunteers, other product managers and other functions inside of the movement
- Progress and status reporting to internal and external stakeholders
