Background
The Renewables Grid Initiative is a unique collaboration of NGOs and TSOs from across Europe engaging in an ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’. We promote fair, transparent, sustainable grid development to enable the growth of renewables to achieve full decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement.
Specific tasks
The Project Manager will work on the following projects and tasks:
Mediterranean Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCEaN)
In 2020 RGI established a multi-stakeholder Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCEaN) to plan offshore wind development and its necessary electricity grid connections in the North and Baltic seas hand in hand with environmental and conservation targets. The objective is to facilitate and enable collaborative, long-term and cross-border planning of offshore infrastructure developments, giving space for both the natural environment and wind energy to thrive. RGI is now establishing a Mediterranean chapter based on the same concept, but adapted to the region’s specific characteristics. Specifically, in the Mediterranean Sea the installed offshore capacity is very limited, but with prospects to grow fast. It presents unique characteristics in terms high levels of biodiversity, water depth, historical and archaeological value, and a high level of human activities such as fisheries and tourism, among others. By bringing together different categories of stakeholders such as wind developers, suppliers, transmission system operators (TSOs) and environmental NGOs active in the Mediterranean, RGI intends to create an opportunity for exchange on innovative practices across different sectors, identify possible win-win solutions for industry and the environment to be shared with policy makers, and facilitate the establishment of further collaborations between industry and NGOs in the future.
The PM will define and implement a workplan anda timeline, act as facilitator and moderator of the Med OCEaN’s activities. In particular the PM will cover the following:
- Stakeholder mapping and engagement: identify and map relevant actors, engage with them and formalise their participation in Med OCEaN
- Strategic Steering: define along with Members the fundamental principles governing Med OCEaN, as well as roles and responsibilities
- Launch of Med OCEaN: organise a workshop (agenda, contact with speakers, selection of invitees, communication and reporting) to give visibility to its establishment
- Advocacy: liaise with policy makers at EU and national level, including keeping an overview of their activities and priorities
- Liaise closely with OCEaN for the North and Baltic seas: finding synergies and exchanging on strategy, knowledge, communication, and good practices
- Fundraising: provide input into fundraising opportunities
- Communication: develop the concept for and manage a dedicated website, coordinate Med OCEaN communication and create dedicated materials
Furthermore, the PM will support the RGI team in other projects as required.
Qualifications and skills
Candidates should have
- work experience of at least three years with an international component
- experience working on nature protection and public acceptance aspects related to large-scale energy infrastructure (a marine environment background and an understanding of different stakeholder groups’ expectations for offshore developments are an added value)
- an understanding of energy and environmental policies at the EU level
- proven ability to work on multiple parallel tasks
- experience in speaking in front of large audiences
- the availability to travel at EU level
- excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and at least one of the following languages: Italian, French, Spanish
- ability to learn fast and to quickly understand new issues; convincing personality with strong capacity to build up trustful relationships and networks
- ability to work fully independently and highly efficiently and to structure own work, but also to work with flexible roles in different teams
- the interest to engage and be a respected discussion partner for stakeholders from industry as well as from the NGO/non-profit sector and beyond
- a genuine interest in climate and nature protection.
