About your Role:

Smartphones and gadgets attract significant media attention nowadays and so communications and PR play an important role for any consumer technology brand. Fairphone started as a campaign to raise awareness about how our phones are connected to diverse international issues from materials use to labour conditions, resource efficiency and electronic waste. This side of our gadgets is still largely unknown and campaigning is an important part of our social enterprise’s goal to create fairer electronics.

Reporting on the impact of our gadgets and consumer behaviour is becoming one angle in the latest developments in tech and we work with the media to create better understanding of how the tech industry works and what innovations and solutions are supporting fairer electronics. In this position, you get to tell the story of how products are made and promote Fairphone’s own cool products, like the Fairphone 2, and how they are trying to address these issues one step at a time.

This role is your exciting opportunity to promote Fairphone products, grow awareness around fairer electronics and continue to build Fairphone’s reputation as a thought leader and frontrunner in its field by collaborating with international mainstream and industry media. You will be part of the communications team and will work closely with our press officer, events manager and PR agencies.

Your Responsibilities:

• Complementing Fairphone’s overall communications strategy with a solid public relations strategy.
• Creating and executing Fairphone’s PR plan, identifying newsworthy opportunities in close collaboration with the press officer and maximizing media exposure.
• Managing and coordinating PR budget, PR agencies and freelancers.
• Hands-on execution of PR projects: from drafting pitches and press releases and delivering them to targeted media to organising press events and media visits.
• Strategic media relations and influencer contact management. Together with our press officer, you will pitch to journalists and handle media requests.
• Ensuring quality coverage of Fairphone facts and messages.
• Liaising with our events manager to align publicity opportunities.
• Being a spokesperson and publicly speaking at events.
• Managing the pool of spokespeople from different teams who represent Fairphone externally, keeping them up-to-date and training new spokespeople.
• Analysing effectiveness of PR activities and optimising PR-plan accordingly.

Your Skills & Experiences:

• You have 5-7 years of relevant work experience, preferably within the social enterprise, corporate responsibility fields. Knowledge of the technology industry a plus.
• You have a master’s degree in communications, journalism, PR or a related field.
• You have near-native English written and verbal communication skills and a passion for turning difficult explanations into clear storytelling. Other languages, especially Dutch, French or German, are a plus.
• You have the ability to combine strategizing and a helicopter view with hands-on work.
• You have project management experience: excellent at handling multiple priorities and deadlines.
• You are an experienced spokesperson and trained in public speaking (giving interviews and presentations).
