Agenda, the alliance for women and girls at risk (hosted by The Young Foundation), exists to ensure that women and girls at risk of abuse, poverty, poor mental health, addiction and homelessness get the support and protection they need. We campaign for systems and services to be transformed; to raise awareness across sectors; and to promote public and political understanding of the lives of women and girls facing multiple disadvantage.
Working with the Director, you will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of Agenda’s policy work and political influencing strategy. We are looking for someone with excellent knowledge of the political landscape and a proven track record of successfully bringing about policy change.
Key Duties
Working with the Director, lead the development and delivery of Agenda’s influencing, policy & public affairs work with a focus on bringing about policy and systemic change for women and girls at risk
Identify the key policy areas for Agenda to influence, including across mental health, homelessness and substance misuse, and lead the development of policy positions through developing in-depth knowledge, horizon scanning and identifying and influencing key debates
Work with women with experience to inform Agenda’s influencing work and identify opportunities and provide support to enable their voices to be heard by policy makers and the public.
Draw on the experiences of Agenda’s members and the learning from Agenda’s place based work to shape our policy and influencing activity
Develop evidence driven, solution focussed policy work including through undertaking desk based and primary research, and producing reports, briefings and consultation responses
Work with the Communications & Campaigns Manger to develop creative impactful campaigns and provide policy input into communications work
Undertake public affairs and parliamentary activity in support of Agenda’s policy objectives
Develop and manage a network of relationships and partnerships in support of Agenda’s influencing objectives including with politicians, Agenda’s members and other stakeholders and organisations
Represent Agenda externally at a range of levels including on public platforms and in high level meetings
Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required
Skills/experience:
Experience of devising and undertaking policy and influencing work for a national charity or a voluntary sector coalition campaign
Proven track record of successfully bring about policy change through policy, public affairs or campaigning work
Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to interpret complex policy issues and communicate these to a wide range of audiences
Strong analytical skills and experience of developing compelling policy positions using research, statistics and other evidence to construct arguments for change
Strong understanding of the political environment and of parliament and ability to use this knowledge to devise creative and effective ways to influence decisions makers
Track record of successfully working with and influencing policy makers, including MPs, civil servants and ministers
Experience of representing organisations externally in meetings and on public platforms
Experience of working with a charity’s beneficiaries/supporters
Demonstrable interest in and understanding of social policy issues related to gender equality, social exclusion and poverty
Commitment to social justice and to upholding the rights of women and girls
Strong team player with a willingness to get stuck in in a small organisation
Headline terms and conditions
Contract: full time fixed term 3 year contract (with the possibility of extension). Requests for flexible or P/T working considered
Benefits: access to a defined contribution pension and 25 days per year + three working days between Christmas and New Year
