Survival seeks an

Assistant to the director’s office

to support the director’s office in increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization across all departments.

This is a position with a huge amount of variety, and enormous potential for professional development.

Requirements

You will be meticulous, driven, and efficient, and highly skilled at communication. You will demonstrate versatility, flexibility, and a talent for mastering new skills.

We are less interested in formal qualifications or prior experience than a demonstrated ability to learn rapidly, understand complex messages, and work with great accuracy and organization. We need you to be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

You must demonstrate commitment to Survival International's vision, mission, and values.

It is crucial that you be highly numerate with flawless written English and extremely strong writing skills. Please do not apply unless you meet these criteria, which will be rigorously tested.

Other requirements:

  • Solid IT skills (mail-merge, Excel formulae, etc.)
  • Touch-typing
  • Ability and readiness to work outside normal hours and to travel, if and when required
  • Confidence and resourcefulness
  • An enthusiastic and personable manner – energetic and committed

Also advantageous:

  • Proficiency in either French, German (preferred), Italian, Portuguese or Spanish
  • Proficiency in design (Adobe Creative Cloud)

Responsibilities

The role of assistant to the director’s office encompasses a wide variety of tasks, subject to change as the priorities of the director evolve and adapt. The following list is not exhaustive.

  • Provide clerical support, including organizing meetings, and drafting minutes
  • Proof-read and edit copy written by other staff
  • Draft high-level correspondence from the director
  • Manage relationships with high donors
  • Assist with organizing events
  • Help manage our board of trustees
  • Draft fundraising grants and progress reports to trusts and foundations
  • Draft and distribute the annual report
  • Ensure our brand guidelines are correctly followed by staff
  • Develop ideas for improving the efficiency of the organization
  • Work to improve communication between offices outside London
  • Find new outlets for our publications and materials
  • Expand our presence online (forums, blogs, comment sections, Wikipedia etc.)

We have a pensions scheme and generous annual leave (25 days’ holiday increasing with length of service + bonus days over Christmas and New Year).

This is a full time position (Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm). The contract is for 12 months (renewable), with a 6-month probationary period.
