The Fore is the UK’s ambitious new funder of dynamic small charities and social enterprises, opening up access to funding and professional expertise for the highest quality organisations driving social change. The Fore matches the skills and resources of the business community with the most talented social entrepreneurs across the UK, connecting businesses and their staff with exciting frontline opportunities to improve society. The Fore works with forward-thinking partners interested in high-impact, cost-effective, thoughtful corporate philanthropy.
The Context
Innovative, early stage charities and social enterprises cannot obtain the funds and support they need to scale and have impact. The entrenched preference amongst traditional funders to support well- established organisations has led to a damaging lack of mobility within the sector.
Private sector funders want to invest in smaller charities that will use the money effectively, but it is virtually impossible for them to sift through and conduct due diligence on the thousands of organisations that are seeking funding.
Many companies either do not have fully-developed CSR programmes or find it hard to offer their employees meaningful, skilled opportunities to volunteer and develop the “softer-skills” that are crucial in more senior and board level positions.
The Fore has a unique model that addresses all these challenges, pairing business skills and funding with exceptional social entrepreneurs for the benefit of both. The Fore identifies organisations with the best ideas, the strongest management and for whom support will create the greatest impact upon future sustainability. The Fore accepts 1,500 to 4,000 applications a year (depending on funds available for distribution) across three 12 week funding rounds, sifting, analysing and carrying out due diligence with the help of trained, fixed-fee ‘low bono’ consultants. The top 3-5% of applicants receive pro bono expertise, mentoring and advice, provided by The Fore’s business partners, along with up to £30,000 of transformation-focused grant funding.
The Fore launched in March 2017 following an extremely successful four-year pilot that was Highly Commended at the 2016 Charity Awards and hailed as ‘a revolutionary criteria-free grant-making scheme’ by Philanthropy: UK. BlackRock, Moody’s, Lansdowne Partners, C. Hoare & Co and the Big Lottery Fund are supporters.
