The Centre

The International Civil Society Centre helps international civil society organisations (ICSOs) maximise their impact for a sustainable and more equitable world.

The Centre works with ICSOs to successfully navigate change. We scan the horizon for opportunities and threats; enable learning and cooperation among ICSOs and their stakeholders; support ICSOs in developing effective leadership; and promote robust accountability to strengthen ICSOs’ legitimacy. The Centre is a not-for-profit organisation fully owned by the organisations it serves, including some of the most influential ICSOs such as Oxfam, Transparency International, SOS Children’s Villages or Amnesty International. We strive to set high standards in management, governance and strategy for ICSOs and the wider sector.

The Centre is currently looking for an

Operations Director

to join the team as soon as possible.

The newly created role of Operations Director offers the opportunity to actively co-shape the next phase of an ambitious and dynamic organisation. In October 2018, the Centre’s Board has approved a new strategy to strengthen the role as a platform and cooperation partner for international ICSOs. A special focus will be on increasing innovation and cooperation around political challenges over the next few years. 

To implement and operationalise these goals, we are looking for an experienced Executive with a passion to shape and continuously develop a growing organisation.

The Operations Director will be part of the Executive Management Team and reports directly to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

The Operations Director will lead and oversee all aspects of the Centre’s administration, finances, HR and IT. This includes the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Budget planning and controlling as well as the full financial oversight of the entire organisation, including power of attorney (Prokura)
  • Reporting to shareholders and other stakeholders on the financial status of the organisation, including the preparation of annual accounts and audits in close cooperation with the external bookkeeper and tax advisor
  • Cooperation with the Centre’s Finance Committee and coordination of the preparation and follow-up of Board and Shareholder Meetings; participation at all governance meetings of the Centre
  • Staff planning and HR administration in close cooperation with the external payroll office and legal advisor
  • Development and implementation of staff development and retention offers
  • Continuous review, update and development of internal processes, procedures and administrative flows
  • Oversight of data security and protection measures in close cooperation with the internal data security officer
  • Managing and leading about four administrative and financial staff members
  • Strategy planning and implementation for all operational aspects of the Centre
  • Leading of strategic projects as assigned by the Executive Director

Requirements

We are looking for a motivated team members with the following profile:

  • Relevant university degree and 5+ years of professional experience in a similar position with a thorough understanding of the German tax and legislative regulations for non-profit organisations
  • Strong management and leadership experience in the non-for profit sector, ideally within an internationally operating organisation
  • Strong team leadership skills and experience in developing the potential and strengths of staff members
  • High level of ownership for the assigned areas of work with a high level of reliability and resilience to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strategic and analytical thinking with a strong focus on solutions and efficient implementation of decisions
  • A proven track-record in planning and coordinating complex processes
  • Very strong communication skills in written and spoken German and English
  • Some experience or the willingness to develop an understanding of the strategic aspects of IT systems such as databases, Office 365 and Office products
