Legal Specialist (fix-term)

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is a very active global group with staff in New York, Berlin and London. OGC focuses in the short term on transactional legal advice and compliance; in the medium term on policy making and good governance; and in the long term on helping make OSF an enduring philanthropy.  OGC serves as a resource for informed decision-making providing independent, timely and thoughtful advice on the broad range of legal issues that our programs, departments, boards and legal entities face as they pursue their visions of change. It looks to prevent legal problems and solve those that occur, to facilitate transactions, and to build structures that consider the longer-term impacts of a transaction, litigation, governance issue or other corporate matter.

The OGC seeks a Legal Specialist in our Berlin office for maternity cover.
Typical duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Organizing legal files and materials so that they are easily accessed and retrieved without compromising the confidentiality or privacy of the information they contain
  • Assisting with preparation of lists, status charts, and data management integral to the department
  • May provide meeting support, (e.g., scheduling meetings, set-up for trainings, and ensuring meeting conference room and equipment are available)
  • May provide administrative support, (e.g., answering phones, printing, copying, scanning, filing, managing status charts, updating work files, performing relevant record-keeping, making travel arrangements, coordinating visas, and preparing expense reports)
  • Developing internal relationships with OSF staff
  • May provide assistance support to attorneys as assigned under the functional supervision of the assigned attorney
  • Coordinating legal documents to be certified or legalized
  • Reviewing legal documents, drafting legal agreements, and other legal documents under various levels of supervision
  • Assuring compliance with internal policy, rules, regulations and reviewing compliance with applicable law
  • Managing a client portfolio with primary responsibility for answering inquiries, drafting legal documentation, conducting research, and assisting with providing legal advice for various levels of issues, and other matters specific to the portfolio
  • Participating in trainings, and acting as a specialist for established portfolio, which may include specialized knowledge in areas of law, and/or the needs of OSF programs and/or OSF regions
  • Performing legal research to assist the legal team to prepare accurate and timely reports, legal advice (under supervision), case files, and other legal documents

Candidate Profile:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated interest and experience with legal and research concepts
  • Understanding of cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Experience working with multiple clients to resolve legal issues, and interacting with high needs clients
  • High level of attention to detail, and organization skills
  • Experience with organizing administrative tasks, (e.g., scheduling meetings, preparing expense reports, organizing information, maintaining confidentiality)
  • Familiarity with data management software - contract processing system, preferred
  • Comfortable working independently and on a team
  • Experience conducting legal research and analysis (i.e., comfortable reading and analyzing legal documentation), preferred
  • Experience with contract review and writing, preferred
  • Familiarity with the legal aspects of grant making, preferred
