About the position

The Programs Director for Europe defines and delivers campaign strategies for GCCM across the region and national levels as appropriate. Collaborating with and supporting partners and members around Europe, the incumbent will provide vision and outstanding project management to strengthen and expand GCCM’s highly successful campaigns. Working within a matrix management framework, the staff member will coordinate work from the global departments of network engagement and communications, and will liaise with other programmatic teams as needed. Being a new position, which is part of a global expansion to strengthen GCCM’s regional capacity across continents, the staff member will play a critical leadership role in the strategic direction of GCCM in the region. This person will report to the Director of Programs and Advocacy.

Areas of responsibility:

Strategic thinking and planning:

  • Define and implement a plan for Europe, including the development of support infrastructure, to engage GCCM members to act towards the organization’s strategic goals of ecological conversion, sustainability, and advocacy.
  • Provide strategic guidance to regional team members, ensuring their campaigning and movement-building efforts have the greatest possible impact in evolving Church and political environments
  • Institute ongoing goal-setting, tracking, and evaluation systems to ensure maximum organizational impact.

Management:

  • Provide support and line management to regional and in-country team members across Europe. Ensuring that goals are clear, holding regular check-ins/feedback and supporting in the definition and delivery of campaign and program strategies.
  • Support project leads as managers of their own staff teams, demonstrating management best practices, contributing ideas and resolving concerns, and ensuring that all teams are well managed.
  • Work within a matrix management framework to guide and be guided by GCCM team members in other departments, such as communications and sustainability, as needed.
  • Contribute to organizational discussions about how to recruit, retain, support and nurture the talent of key staff across the world.

External relationships

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with relevant stakeholders, partners and members.
  • Ensure relevant grant reports and documents are completed in a timely manner.
  • Represent GCCM in public venues.

Other

  • Understand GCCM’s history, campaigns, and theory of change, and keep current with basic climate science, EU policy and Church context.
  • From time to time, contribute work towards GCCM’s overall mission that is outside standard responsibilities and instead relies solely on geographic location or work capacity. Support GCCM major initiatives such as the Laudato Si’ Week, Season of Creation, the Catholic sustainability program and other projects that might arise on a case-by-case basis.

If the candidate has strong experience dealing with Catholic networks, the position could be expanded to also lead the Member Organizations program of GCCM.

Requirements

Candidates should:

  • demonstrate 5 to 7 years’ experience in the areas of responsibility
  • demonstrate familiarity with ecological issues at both the level of impact and the level of policy
  • demonstrate a sustained history of working on advocacy campaigns
  • be comfortable working in a prayerful faith-based environment

  • Leads by example: Endorses and embodies GCCM values and the Laudato Si’ paradigm in behavior and words.
  • Leads oneself: Shows considerable self-awareness and is inherently curious about how he/she adds value to the organization. Fosters a growth mindset that is open to change.
  • Compelling and authoritative: Is inspiring, articulate, and persuasive, to compellingly present complex ideas to Catholic individuals and institutions and a wider audience.
  • Culturally sensitive: Is aware of differing cultural practices and can sensitively and authentically engage in a wide variety of relationships.

Languages

  • English, with preference for other languages (particularly Italian)

Location:

Anywhere in Europe, preferably in Rome.

Type:

Full-time position

Work environment

May work at home or in an office, depending on the location. This is envisaged as a full-time role. However, we are open to discussing flexible working options to take individual circumstances into account where needed.
