This offering is a unpaid Volunteer-Position including a stipend by Siemens-Stiftung covering your expenses (details listed below).

SIMGAS is a Dutch - Tanzanian, innovative, design and production company that focuses on clean, affordable and high-quality energy and sanitation solutions. They offer millions of rural households the opportunity to improve their lives and income positions. Their teams in The Netherlands and East Africa work together to design and mass produce high quality, modular, domestic biogas and bio-sanitation systems. So we will want you to visit both places. Thereby, they create healthy and safe environments while contributing to the reduction of indoor air pollution, deforestation, and carbon emissions.

In most developing countries, raw milk is not cooled at farm level, causing 30-50% to go to waste (IFC, 2014). SimGas is developing the first off-grid, biogas-powered milk chiller at farm level: the Biogas Milk Chiller. This will enable farmer households to maximize their income from milk and at the same time reduce the amount of trips to the milk collection centre, saving a lot of time.

Deliverables

Your work will ensure the development of a better product at a lower cost price which will enable more farmers to access the technology of milk cooling, enlarging the impact of the technology. Your field of work is to prepare a field-proven product design ready for series production which means in particular:

  • Generate insights in customer requirements
  • Generate insights in production in East Africa
  • Determine and advise on the best production strategy for the Biogas Milk Chiller by tapping in on his/her experience with mass production and global sourcing of large (and preferably refrigerator) products
  • Assist in getting the first series of 800 units produced and implemented by suggesting make or buy decisions and providing insights in: suppliers, investments, timelines etc.
  • Assist in optimizing the material use and product lifetime of the Biogas Milk Chiller by applying experience of design and production of large (and preferably refrigerator) products, and reducing production and assembly costs

With your help SimGas aims to be able to supply and install the first 750 biogas-powered milk chiller systems to customers in East Africa: Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Rwanda
