Junior Professional Officer in 2030 Global Goals

The Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA) was established on 9 August 1973 pursuant to Economic and Social Council’s resolution 1818 (LV). Its purpose was to stimulate economic activity in member countries, strengthen cooperation between them promote development.

In recognition of the social component of its work, the Commission was renamed the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) under Economic and Social Council resolution 69/1985 of July 1985.

ESCWA was initially located in Beirut (1974-1982), moved to Baghdad (1982-1991) and Amman (1991-1997), and subsequently returned to Beirut, its permanent headquarters, where it has remained to this day.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist the Deputy Executive Secretary (DES) on Programme in following-up on issues related to the implementation of sustainable development goals in the Arab region.
  • Support the DES on Programme in ensuring effective liaison with UN Headquarters as well as external partners on matters related to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
  • Act as the Secretariat for the inter-disciplinary ESCWA Task Team in charge of fostering greater integration of the goals within ESCWA’s overall programme of work.
  • Liaise with substantive divisions at ESCWA and coordinate policy issues and country responses pertaining to sustainable development.
  • Collect, evaluate, interpret, analyze and compile specified qualitative socio-economic information obtained from a variety of sources and pertaining to particular sectors and countries on sustainable development topics.
  • Maintain databases and organize non-quantitative information gathered from different substantive divisions.
  • Assist in the development of a regional programme to build the capacity of ESCWA member States in adapting, implementing, and monitoring the Global Goals.
  • Assist in the organization and servicing of the multi-stakeholder Arab Sustainable Development Forum by preparing inputs for reports, coordinating policy papers from substantive divisions, external experts and partnering institutions, and assisting in the organization of panels and round tables.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in economics, international relations, international development, Middle Eastern studies, political science, social development, or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of work experience in political, social or economic development is desirable.
  • Experience working in the Arab region is also desirable.

Key Competencies:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge and experience of using all MS Office applications.
